USING THE COHORT 49 GOOGLE GROUP

We created a private Google group for your institute to provide a way for participants to connect  prior to the session to discuss sharing travel or lodging and also to post articles as a part of the pre-work faculty ask you to complete before attending the institute.

We will only be using the email function of the group, not any of the online options.  Simply type the email address listed at the left into the To: line of your email to send a message to the entire group.

With your first post, please help us begin to build the learning community by introducing yourself.

If you run into any issues with the group, please contact sjtiadmin@sjti.org.

INSTITUTE PRE-WORK

Because we believe in the whole community participating in educating one another, there is work for you to do and share prior to attending.

  1. ARTICLE SHARING: By Friday, May 23, please SHARE TWO great articles with our learning community by emailing links or documents to the whole group.  Follow the directions for accessing the cohort 49 Google group above.  And be sure to introduce yourself to the cohort!  NOTE: Choose articles that discuss/analyze current issues and dynamics of race and racism in the U.S. and/or around the world. Please share at least one article that goes beyond the US race “binary” of Black and White, and explores issues related to Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi Americans, Indigenous/Native Americans, Southwest Asians/North Africans, and/or People who identify as Mixed Race, Biracial or Multiracial.
  2. READ ALL of the READINGS linked at the bottom of this Participant Page before the start of your session.
  3. READ A FEW MORE articles/chapters on racism. We need everyone to take the time to read 6-10 articles or chapters on racism. Expand your knowledge on the topic. Please read the articles your colleagues share along with additional content you find. Some books we recommend as primers, especially for whites: …But I’m NOT Racist! Tools for Well-Meaning Whites by Kathy Obear. Download a free copy: https://drkathyobear.com/but-im-not-racist/ and Uprooting Racism by Paul Kivel. There are additional recommendations at the bottom of this page.
